Notes
A Note on Works of the “Divine Comedy” with Hand Signatures by Salvador Dali. None of the works of the “Divine Comedy” were released as Editions with Hand-Signatures by Salvador Dali. The Editor, Mr. Jean Estrade, over a period of years, had Dali sign slightly less than 100 sets for Les Heures Claires. These sets were sold to dealers by Les Heures Claires. Mr. Estrade retained for his personal collection approximately 10 sets which were reserved for the Editor. In addition it is known that Dali was commissioned to sign suites of the “Divine Comedy” which were purchased from Les Heures Claires, for three different galleries – Orangerie Galerie of Cologne, Germany; Lublin Fine Arts of Greenwich, Connecticut; and Transworld Art of New York. In July 1959, les Heures Claires purchased exclusivity and all reproduction rights for Dante’s La Divine Comédie . including the 21 copies on Japon paper reserved for Joseph Foret and the 4765 copies on Velin de Rives paper (text et illustrations) were engraved and printed together under the direction of Jean Estrade. All the Woodblocks were destroyed after a single printing. These Signed Wood Engraving prints are from Dante’s Divine Comédie (1960). SALVADOR DALI illustrated this classic work in 1960 with 100 colored Wood Engravings printed on Velin de Rives. The Prestel Catalogue Raisonné of Prints II, Lithographs and Wood Engravings 1956-1980 says, “With few exceptions, all examples…bear engraved signatures in the design itself. Only a few of the Prints were Hand-Signed”. The Editions herein offered were signed by Dali for Dr. Giuseppi Albaretto, current owner of Les Heures Claires who is one of the publishers, at the Hotel Meurice, in Paris, on November 24,1974. Albert Field, Salvador Dali’s Official Archivist, has also certified as to their Authenticity. This is One of the Signed Woodblock from the Divine Comedy, published by Joseph Foret/Les Heures Claires. The full suite was certified Authentic by Albert Field, President of “The Salvador Dali Archives”. We are including with your order the following documentation: 1) A COPY of the Certification from “The Salvador Dali Archives” Signed by Albert Field, dated 13 June 96. 2) A COPY of the Certification letter Signed by Salvador Dali dated Paris, le 24 Novembre 1974 from Hotel Meurice in Paris.
