Hardcover. 192 pp. A beautiful book of 192 plates of Currier and Ives' work and their fascinating history. In 1840 after the sinking of the steamboat Lexington on the Long Island Sound, an illustration by N. Currier of the disaster appeared in the 'Extra Sun.' The publication was the first illustrated extra in history and made N. Currier an overnight sensation with his realistic illustrations of events and personalities. With his partner he continued to document American life from 1834 through the civil war and into the Industrial revolution until his death in 1888. Book size 12x9x1 inches.
