Raoul UBAC
Belgium

(1910 - 1985)
Raoul Ubac was one of the stable of artists of the prestigious Galerie Maeght. Raoul Ubac was born in Malmédy, Belgium. His real name was Rudolf Gustav Maria Ernst Ubach. Ubac's first ambition was to be a forest ranger, and his art is notable for its wish to integrate human beings into the wider natural world. Ubac studied engraving at Hayter's Atelier 17. Initially a member of the Surrealists, Raoul Ubac's art turned abstract under the influence of Jean Bazaine, and from the 1950s became ever more sculptural in its concerns and techniques.
