American painter, born Robert Clarke, changed his last name to Indiana in homage to his birth state early on in his career. He moved to New York in 1954 and quickly began working in the Pop Art style that was prevalent at the time.printmaker and sculptor, widely recognized as one of the leading exponents of American Pop art. While as an artist, Indiana, has also created figurative pieces, his most characteristic pieces are geometric with letters or various signs, such as his commissioned piece for the New York State Pavilion in the New York World Fair, 1964, with the words ‘ EAT ’. His most familiar pieces are sculptures, with the letters ‘ L-0-V-E ’. In 1964, Indiana also worked on the film EAT, made with Andy Warhol.
