André Dunoyer de SEGONZAC
France

(1884 - 1975)
Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac: A leading French painter and etcher of the twentieth century, Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris (1901 - 1906), under J. P. Laurens and Charles Guerin. His first illustrations were published in 1910. Dunoyer de Segonzac’s first etching was made in 1919, after brief lessons from J. E. Laboureur. A master of both portrait and landscape etching, Dunoyer de Segonzac’s art became tremendously influential for a generation of artists searching for an alternative to abstraction. Called both a ‘neo-Realist’ and a ‘neo-Classicist’, Dunoyer de Segonzac etched directly from nature and created both a brilliant and spontaneous imagery where an economy of line was crucial.
