Born in Pistoia, Marini was a sculptor, painter and print-maker. He studied in Monza and established himself in Milan where he was professor at the Brera Academy. His works always showed an individual style, not part of any other modern movement. The horse and rider became an important element in his iconography. Among his many prizes was the Venice Bienniale of 1952 and he is considered one of the most significant figures in 20th centuryart.
