COROT, Jean-Baptiste Camille was born in Paris but was educated in Rouen after which he returned to Paris and worked in a drapery store, but in 1822 he began studying art. In 1825 he settled in Rome where he studied classical landscapes. In 1827 he exhibited two of his Rome landscapes at the Salon, with great success. Re-settled in Paris he sketched the surrounding forests although he continued to make study trips to Italy. About 1840 his style became fully developed, characterized by great delicacy, sacrificing detail to impression and harmony of composition. His etchings are much prized
