Rops was born in Naumur, where he studied at the Fine Art Academy. In 1854 he moved to Brussels. The writings of Baudelaire influenced him and he embraced symbolism and romanticism. His work took on an erotic aspect. His early prints were mostly lithographs but he became expert at soft-ground etching (vernis-mous) and was much sought after as an illustrator of books. He spent most of his last years in France, where he died
