Antonio Suárez, for many, one of the greatest representatives of the Spanish art of the twentieth century, remembered El Paso Group founder and one of the classics of the extensive list of Spanish abstract painting, died in Madrid. Suarez, who had served 90 years in January, was born in Gijón, 26 days after the beginning of 1923. He began his relationship with art in the studio of architect Antonio Álvarez-Hevia Gijón (1909-1986), where he had as a companion and artistic accomplice Joaquín Rubio Camin (1929-2007), at that time emerging as a painter and sculptor. Encouraged by Evaristo Valle (1873-1951) and Nicanor Pinole (1878-1978), organized by the journalist Arcadio Camin and Baquero (1925-2005) the First Christmas Show Gijón in 1948. That same year, Antonio Suarez contact School of Madrid, two before setting a date for his first abstract work, in 1950. In 1951, he moved to Paris. There begins its international adventure leaving soon. A few years back to Spain, and as an artist of wide records added to his painting the murals and stained glass windows of which has now given historical Asturias. And not only witness their creative their homeland. Also the Autonomous University of Madrid, the Official Language School in Barcelona and cultural center of the Asturian Center of Mexico City, to name a few examples. In The Principality his art mural can be seen at Banco Bilbao Vizcaya of Oviedo and Gijón, Gozon City Council or the School of Industrial Engineering of Gijón. His hand is also behind the windows of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Oviedo, the Oratory of the Industrial School of Gijón, the Palacio de los Deportes in Oviedo or on the floor of Paseo de Los Alamos in the San Francisco Field Oviedo. Suárez made a painting based abstract results but figurative. Chromatically, evolving from the dark tones of his time in El Paso, until light and soft colors later. His painting, always moving, transmitted from the postulates of informality internalized a visual discourse. His work is included, among others, from the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts of Asturias, the Reina Sofia Contemporary Art of Barcelona, the University of Oviedo, the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca and museums in Seville, San Francisco , Bilbao, Leverkusen and Austin. Exhibited at the Bienal of Alexandria (Egypt) 1957, Venice Biennale 1958, Sao Paulo Bienal 1959, Museum of Modern Art , New York 1960. Exhibitor in the Spanish Pavillion of New York World’s Fair.
