Marcel MOULY
France

(1918 - 2008)
Marcel Mouly was born in Paris. Prior to WWII, art was essentially a hobby for Mouly. In 1942 he was arrested by the Nazis on suspicion of being a spy, and held in solitary confinement for a year. It was this experience that resolved Marcel Mouly to devote himself to art. On release, he befriended Édouard Pignon, who had a notable influence on Mouly's own art. He was also influenced by Braque, Matisse, and Picasso. In 1943 Mouly exhibited his first paintings at the Salon d'Automne. In 1949 he had his first solo show at the Librairie Bergamasque in Paris. Marcel Mouly was made a Chevalier de l'Order des Arts et des Lettres in 1957, and was awarded the Premier Prix de la Lithographie in 1973.
